Mahabharata is not just a story. The authors used the story to teach us many important lessons. These lessons aim to bring out our best. We all want success, because success makes us happy. We want rewards. Success will get us rewards.
Why did Pandu want five sons? There was something special about each son. They wanted us not to compare ourselves with our brothers or sisters. Each of us are special. We must make this special about us, the best about us. Dhritarashtra was blind, but his ability to sense and hear was beyond compare. He developed his strength. His blindness upset him, but he was not jealous of his brother Pandu’s ability to see.
There is another interesting idea behind the five Pandavas. The five Pandavas are like the five fingers in our hand.
– The strongest finger in our hand is our thumb. We can call it Bhima or our Determination.
– We use our index finger to point things. We use it to show the Direction not only to others but for our desires too. This is our Arjun and represents our Direction or Dedication.
– The tallest finger is like the eldest brother Yudhisthir. It stands for Dharma which he represented through his responsibility, duty and good conduct. We must use our mind and not our heart to decide. This finger represents Dharma, and is our finger of Decision.
– It now leaves us with the ring finger. People wear their nicest jewellery on this finger. When a man desires a woman to be his wife, he proposes to her. He offers a ring. We call this an engagement ring. If the woman also desires him, she accepts his offer by allowing him to put the ring in her ring finger. This is our finger of Desire, we can also call it Nakul, because he is the image of what we Desire.
– We now have our little finger and we can call him our Sahadeva. He is the wise voice inside all of us. It is our Discretion finger.
Our fingers together give us the support me need to live our lives. We can call this our 5Ds and they work in concert. When we Desire something, it is our Ring finger telling our Discretion finger for in principle approval. It is like our inner voice dealing with a desire. This little finger will then take the Desire to the eldest for a Decision. When the eldest approves, it goes down to the next two for realising our desire.
Explore the many guidances for success.
